About the Black-lored Yellowthroat

The black-lored yellowthroat (Geothlypis auricularis) is a species of bird in the family Parulidae, the New World warblers. It is found in Ecuador and Peru. The black-lored yellowthroat was formally described in 1883 with its current binomial Geothlypis auricularis.

The black-lored yellowthroat's further taxonomy is not fully resolved. Well into the twenty-first century it was treated as a subspecies of the masked yellowthroat (Geothlypis aequinoctialis). In 2015 the IOC recognized it again as a full species. BirdLife International's Handbook of the Birds of the World (HBW) recognized it in 2017 and the Clements taxonomy in 2022. The initial version of AviList in 2025 also treats it as a species. However, the South American Classification Committee retains it as a subspecies of the masked yellowthroat.

The black-lored yellowthroat has two subspecies, the nominate G. a. auricularis (Salvin, 1883) and G. a. peruviana (Taczanowski, 1884). Some authors have suggested that they should both be treated as full species. The black-lored yellowthroat is 12.5 to 14 cm (4.9 to 5.5 in) long and weighs about 8 to 11 g (0.28 to 0.39 oz).
